Simple trauma (PTSD as an adult) - Therapy in Nice and on the Côte d'Azur

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious condition that can affect anyone after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Unfortunately, all too often the symptoms of PTSD go unnoticed or are misinterpreted. Do you know the signs? Can you recognise them in yourself or in people close to you? If you have experienced a traumatic event, it is crucial to be aware of the symptoms that could indicate that you are suffering from PTSD.

Here are some common symptoms to look out for:

  1. Flashbacks and nightmares: Recurrently reliving the traumatic event, whether through flashbacks or nightmares, is one of the most characteristic signs of PTSD.

  2. Avoidance: Actively avoiding memories, places, people or activities that remind one of the traumatic event.

  3. Emotional hyperactivity: Overreacting to emotional stimuli, including mood swings, irritability or angry outbursts.

  4. Hyper-vigilance: Being constantly on the alert, feeling easily frightened or easily startled in response to minor stimuli.

  5. Social isolation: Withdrawing socially, feeling disconnected from others or having difficulty forming intimate relationships.

If you identify with any of these symptoms, it is essential to consult a mental health professional. PTSD can be treated effectively with the right help, and it's important to seek support as soon as possible. Don't ignore the signs. Early recognition and management of PTSD can make all the difference to your recovery.

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach for treating trauma and associated disorders. Here is a list of the most common simple traumas. It is essential to recognise that each individual reacts differently to traumatic events, but here are some examples of simple traumas that can be effectively treated with EMDR:

  1. Car accident: Car accidents can leave significant emotional scars, including flashbacks, anxiety and nightmares.

  2. Emotional abuse: Experiences of emotional abuse, whether in childhood or adulthood, can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other traumatic symptoms.

  3. Bullying at school or work: Bullying can have a profound effect on self-esteem, self-confidence and psychological well-being.

  4. Loss of a loved one: Bereavement and the loss of a loved one can trigger traumatic responses and complicate the grieving process.

  5. Natural disasters: Events such as earthquakes, hurricanes or fires can cause trauma in survivors, even if they have not been directly injured.

  6. Physical violence: Physical assaults, whether in childhood or adulthood, can leave deep emotional scars.

  7. Serious accident or injury: Trauma resulting from a serious accident or injury can lead to symptoms of post-traumatic stress and anxiety.

  8. Witnessing a traumatic event: Witnessing a traumatic event, such as an accident or an act of violence, can also cause psychological trauma.

  9. Separation or divorce: Relationship breakdowns can be experienced as traumatic events, especially when children are involved.

  10. Serious illness: Being diagnosed with a serious illness or witnessing the illness of a loved one can be emotionally and psychologically distressing.

It is important to note that this list is not exhaustive and that any event that may be perceived as traumatic by a person can be treated with EMDR. EMDR treatment can help individuals overcome the negative effects of these experiences and return to healthy psychological functioning.

When a person experiences trauma, whether from a single or prolonged event, the memories of that experience can remain imprinted in the brain in a dysfunctional way. This can manifest itself in symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance and intense emotional distress. EMDR intervenes by reorganising these traumatic memories, enabling the brain to process the information adaptively.

The EMDR process generally involves several stages. Firstly, the therapist helps the patient to identify the specific traumatic memories that are causing the most distress. Next, the patient is asked to focus on these memories while following eye movements, tapping or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This facilitates the adaptive processing of information, meaning that traumatic memories are reprocessed in a way that is less disruptive.

As the process progresses, traumatic memories lose their intense emotional charge and become more neutral. Negative thoughts and beliefs associated with the trauma are often replaced by more positive perceptions and feelings of resilience. Symptoms such as flashbacks and nightmares also diminish, offering significant relief to the patient.

What makes EMDR so effective is that it acts directly on the brain's information processing mechanisms, allowing traumatic memories to be reorganised in an adaptive way. Unlike other therapeutic approaches that focus primarily on managing symptoms, EMDR aims to resolve the roots of the trauma, offering deeper and longer-lasting healing.

As a hypnotherapist trained in psychotraumatology, I am convinced of the effectiveness of this approach in helping people to overcome their trauma and return to a fulfilled life. Thanks to EMDR, it is possible to transform the emotional scars of the past into sources of strength and resilience for the future.

Important note: Hypnotherapy and EMDR, even when practised by a therapist, are in no way substitutes for medicine. All medical conditions must be monitored and/or treated by healthcare professionals. Furthermore, I am not a psychiatrist or psychologist. As a result, I do not make therapeutic diagnoses and no medication should be changed or stopped without the advice of the medical staff who prescribed it. However, I am trained in psychopathology and psychotraumatology. In other words, I am able to detect the symptoms of the most common psychological and personality disorders. And above all, thanks to the tools I use, I'm able to help you resolve the emotional distress that is the cause of these disorders.
